When was the last time someone asked you why you are so excited to be in the business you are in? If someone asked you today, how would you answer? I was asked this question on Friday and then asked to speak about it in Boston next week at our summer International Dale Carnegie Franchisee Association (IDCFA) owners’ meetings.
The question is not about the past, and it’s not necessarily about the future. Rather it is really focused on the present looking towards the future. Reflecting on the question, I realized the answer would have been different every year over the past 28 years except for one common theme that has never changed. Being involved with the Dale Carnegie organization allows me to live out my passion every day by helping others, believing in what is possible, and aligning my core values with Dale Carnegie principles and beliefs.
As an executive coach, it is always challenging when the individuals I am coaching believe the organization they’re working for forces them to compromise their core values. This is a major cause of stress and creates a real flight risk. This past year, I encountered two executives I could not save for the company that hired me. In one case, leaving was a new lease on life for the individual. In the other case, I have not heard from the person, but I believe the individual is doing well.
The big question: How do your core values align with your company’s aspirations? Without compromising your values, what adjustment(s) will you choose to make?
