Don’t Let the Energy of January Fade by February

Posted on January 14, 2026 by Tonia

It happens every year.

We start January with fresh goals, renewed motivation, and big visions for the future. The energy is high. Kickoff meetings are buzzing. Whiteboards are filled with bold ideas. Everyone’s excited.

Then…February hits. And that spark? It fades.

The truth is, the early energy of a new year is powerful, but it’s also fragile. If you don’t intentionally sustain it, momentum fizzles and teams slip back into reactive mode.

So how do you keep the energy alive, long after the confetti settles and the Q1 dashboards lose their shine?

Here are three ways leaders can keep their teams focused, engaged, and energized as the year unfolds.

1. Set Strategic Checkpoints (Not Just Annual Goals)

Big annual goals are important. But they can also feel far away and overwhelming, especially by February.

Instead of setting it and forgetting it, create intentional check-ins to reconnect with the vision and celebrate what’s already been accomplished.

Think:

  • Monthly “progress pulse” meetings
  • Team-wide accountability rituals (Friday wins, Monday kickoffs)
  • Quick surveys to gather input and course-correct early

These checkpoints help teams pause, reflect, and re-energize. And they give you the chance to offer coaching and encouragement before performance dips or burnout sets in.

2. Celebrate Small Wins Loudly and Often

Don’t wait for Q2 results to recognize progress.

When teams feel like their work is seen and appreciated, they stay motivated, and more importantly, they stay focused. Use January and February to build a culture of celebration, where small wins are shared and success is social.

Whether it’s:

  • A Slack shoutout
  • A team lunch
  • A “win of the week” highlight in your meetings

You’re reinforcing momentum and modeling that progress matters, not just perfection.

Bonus: When you celebrate wins tied to your team’s values or strategic goals, you help connect everyday actions to the bigger picture.

3. Stay Visible and Connected as a Leader

One of the fastest ways to lose momentum? Leadership silence.

It’s tempting to retreat into planning mode or focus on performance reviews, but your visibility in Q1 matters more than you think.

Check in regularly. Walk the floor. Send a video update. Ask your team what’s energizing them, and what’s draining them. The goal isn’t to micromanage; it’s to stay present, supportive, and tuned in.

When leaders stay visible, teams stay engaged. When leaders stay curious, teams stay aligned.

The Bottom Line

January energy is a gift. But it’s your job as a leader to turn it into lasting momentum.

Don’t let it fade.

Check in. Celebrate early. Stay visible.

Because the best teams don’t just start strong, they stay strong. And that starts with you.
