Whether or not you already say them, most people are aware of what affirmations are. Before you count them out, there is power in self-talk. The way you speak to yourself will greatly impact your self-belief, and ultimately how you view and receive your environment. Affirmations are statements you can say to yourself regarding any aspect of your life, including your career! You can say them first thing in the morning while you’re getting ready for work, during the workday when you’re feeling discouraged, or even at the end of the day when you’re recapping your day. Here are a few ways to incorporate affirmations into your day:
Before a big day
Every now and then, we get hit with a big day that leaves us feeling anxious or nervous as it approaches. Maybe it’s a big presentation that’s looming or the first day at a new job. It’s normal to have an emotional response to an event that is out of our comfort zone and everyday routine. But instead of letting it keep you up all night tossing and turning with stress, try calming your mind and saying some affirmations that will remind you of what you’ve done in the past and what you’re capable of. Here are some examples – I am well-rested and excited for the day. I have everything I need to succeed. Today is an opportunity to grow and learn.
When you get constructive criticism
It’s normal to get feedback on the job—that’s the only way we grow. Instead of letting your emotions get the best of you, take some time to reflect on the conversation and begin to make a plan to hit expectations. Most importantly, don’t let the negative self-talk kick in! Don’t just listen to your stream of thoughts—take control and speak positively to yourself. Here are some examples – I am more than my circumstances dictate. I can control how I respond to things that are confronting. I have everything I need to succeed.
When you’re on tight deadlines
Some deadlines are more stressful than others. Instead of feeling panicked and letting your thoughts spiral over “what if” scenarios, take a moment to collect yourself, reprioritize, and ask for help if needed. Having clear goals and knowing what’s not just urgent but urgent and important will help you feel more in control. After doing so, take a moment to step away from your work. You can either step outside for fresh air or go to the bathroom. Take this opportunity to give yourself a pep talk and speak positively to yourself about what you can and will accomplish. Here are some examples – Asking for help is a sign of self-respect and self-awareness. I am more than my circumstances dictate. I release the fears that do not serve me.
