From the six stages of human development for the servant leader — Always be coaching!
Stage 2: Coach
This is the stage that most leaders fly past. Perhaps because they themselves are unclear, or they assume others know and understand, and perhaps have even perfected an activity, skill, or task, and only need to be reminded. Coaching is not an option; it is a requirement of servant leaders. The question is how to coach effectively to influence and achieve the desired results.
To actively coach there are five steps: Use each step as necessary and appropriate.
Tell them
Show them
Do it with them
Have them do it
Show appreciation or give encouragement
Note: loop back as often as necessary.
For example…
I was walking down the hallway with a divisional VP when we passed a younger associate who was texting while walking. Coaching opportunity in the moment, the senior executive said, “Excuse me. Could I ask you to stop and step to the side to finish your important communication?” And with a friendly smile, he continued, “Thank you.”
I was walking across a nuclear power plant facility when we needed to take five steps up and down crossing a large pipe at the top my escort coached me, “John, on our way down, could I ask you to hold on to the hand rail, the reason why …”
